Form 990, the form we all
file for our exempt organizations, has been drastically changed for the
Year 2008. The new rules will affect all Form 990 returns filed for
years ending on December 31, 2008 and later. Although we don’t need to
worry about filing the new form until sometime in 2009, we need to know
about the changes now so we can make any necessary bookkeeping or
administrative changes that may be necessary.
IRS is asking new questions and requiring answers. For example, do you
know how many voting members are in your governing body? Do you know how
many voting members are independent? What does IRS mean by
“independent?”
As always, if you understand why IRS is asking a particular question it
is much easier to properly prepare your answers. What are they trying to
determine? What do they need to know? Does that question really apply to
your organization?
Come find out on August 1. Be ready when your tax accountant comes
knocking on your door next year.
